Above all things, the church is called to bear witness to the love of God for the world by imitating the life of Christ and living God’s love.

The end of the mission of God as it is expressed in the world through the life of Jesus and the witness of the church is salvation. As Paul writes in his letter to the Romans (1:16): “For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” As Paul makes clear in the letter, the means of that salvation is the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ who is the Son of God and the Lord of the world. This salvation entails the liberation of the created order—humanity and the entire cosmos—from the powers of sin and death (Rom. 8:2–25). In the same way that the mission of God in Jesus Christ to love the world is passed on to the church, so the mission of salvation and reconciliation is entrusted to the church:

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:17–20 NRSV).
